The length of time the flea can go without eating before it starves to death depends on the stage of the life cycle that the flea is in.
Once the flea emerges from its cocoon in the pupa stage, it only has about one week in order to obtain a blood meal or else it will die.
After it has successfully obtained its first blood meal, it is considered an adult flea and is at that time able to reproduce and lay eggs.
After this first blood meal, however, and adult flea can go an amazing three years without eating another meal if necessary without starving to death.
