Mosquitoes bite all types of warm-blooded animals, including most mammals and birds. There are hundreds of different species of mosquito, most of them evolving to be specifically adapted to biting a certain type of animal.
For example, there are certain species of mosquito that are adapted to biting certain kinds of birds, which leads to the spread of avian flu and other diseases which mosquitoes can be a vector for. In addition, many types of animals are well protected from mosquito bites due to their thick coat of fur or hair on their body.
Mosquito Bites on Dogs and Cats
For this reason, dogs, cats, and many other animals do not receive a large number of mosquito bites, although they are quite susceptible to flea bites. Mosquitoes can bite cats, but because cats are covered in fur, they are usually sufficiently protected from mosquito bites. A mosquito does not have the ability to maneuver itself through the hair follicles of a cat in order to reach the skin to successfully bite it.
There are certain locations on a cat where it is not protected from mosquitoes, such as on the tip of the nose, and a cat may be bitten their especially while it is sleeping. Cats are much more vulnerable to flea bites then they are to mosquito bites, because fleas have the ability to penetrate and maneuver through their thick coat of fur, and attach themselves to the hair follicles of a cat.
