Fortunately, the advent of modern flea medication such as Frontline has made getting rid of fleas on dogs and cats a fairly easy task. There are many different types of flea control products, but flea medicine for your pets is by far the most effective, and it should be the first thing that you do.
Frontline kills virtually 100% of all adult fleas that come in contact with your cat or dog within the first 12 hours of its initial application on the animal.
The adult fleas need to seek out your cat or dog in order to feed on the blood, so that they can reproduce and lay more eggs. So an animal that has been treated with flea medicine acts as a sort of death trap for fleas, by attracting them and then quickly killing them.
You will continue to see new adult fleas on your cat or dog for a period of a few weeks, because there are still flea eggs and flea pupa in the environment that must develop into adult fleas that will seek out a blood meal and be killed in their turn.
But the lifecycle of the flea infestation will be fatally interrupted, and after all of the flea eggs have developed into adult fleas and been killed, you will have successfully eradicated fleas from your dog or cat for the long-term, as long as you continue to keep them on their monthly flea medication.
There are other products that you can use to get rid of fleas on dogs and cats, and one of my favorites is diatomaceous earth, which is an all-natural powder that has been ground from fossils. Food grade diatomaceous earth is safe to eat, and can be applied directly to pets, and can also be spread into the carpeting and other areas where you have fleas. It kills not only adult fleas but fleas in all stages of their life cycle.
There are also several natural oils which act as a type of natural flea repellent that you can apply directly to the skin of your cats and dogs. Tea tree oil, lemongrass oil, and many more may be used. You just want to dilute the oil in a spray bottle full of water and then apply it directly to the animals were furniture or wherever else it is needed.
By using these methods, you will assuredly be successful at freeing you and your pets from the misery of being bitten by fleas. Most people can get by with simply giving their pets the flea medication, but it may be combined with these other products as well.
