If a flea infestation in a house is not treated, it can live there indefinitely. But even when an infestation is treated, it can take several weeks or even a few months in order to get rid of all the fleas in the home.

They lay dormant in the carpeting and other areas of your house while they wait for dog or cat to come roaming through their vicinity, at which time they will emerge from their protective shell to feed.
Putting your pets on a flea medication such as Frontline is the best way to get rid of fleas in your home, because it kills all of the adult fleas that come in contact with the animal within the first 12 hours of administration, and successfully interrupts the flea life cycle.
The medication only kills adult fleas, however, so it can take time for the other stages of the flea life cycle to develop and be killed as well. In the meantime, you can use other flea control products such as flea spray or flea powder, which are successful at killing all stages of the flea life cycle, to speed up the process.
