In current times, it is highly rare for a person to die from flea bites or flea infestation. One way this could happen would be if a person was severely allergic to the chemicals that a flea injects into his body during a flea bite.
Most people have a mild allergic reaction which results in the raised red bumps and itching associated with flea bites. Some people are not allergic at all however, and some people are extremely allergic which could pose a danger of life or death magnitude in certain instances.
For example, a person’s throat could become significantly inflamed and enlarged due to allergic reaction, which could potentially block or restrict the airway and prevent proper breathing.
Throughout history, however, there are times when fleas have killed or contributed to the death of humans at alarming rates. For example, fleas helped to spread the bubonic plague when it ravaged much of Europe. Fleas are carriers of viruses and bacteria which can be spread from host to host.
Even in current times, a person with a weakened immune system could potentially contract a virus from a flea bite which could develop into a serious health issue.
On the whole though, it is very rare today for a person to die from exposure to fleas and flea bites.
