Fleas will bite humans, but it is difficult for them to actually live on humans because it is not so easy for them to attach themselves and hide on a human body, like it is for them to do on cats and dogs and other furry animals.
The host animals that fleas feed on usually have a thick coat of hair which they can cling to and camouflage themselves in. The animals fur is the perfect place for them to lay eggs so that when the fleas emerge they are already in close proximity to a suitable host and can obtain a blood meal.
Adult fleas like to live on their host animal and never leave it, if possible. This is difficult for them to do on humans because our comparatively small amount of body hair. Humans are also more adept than animals at detecting and killing fleas that bite them and come in contact with their body, which makes it difficult for them to actually live on the body of a human being.
Humans are usually a secondary target for the fleas, as fleas prefer to feed on their primary host, whether that be a dog or some other animal. They will bite humans though, if they need to feed and a human presents itself as a target because he is in their environment.
So, in most cases the fleas actually live on animals and pets in the household, but will also bite humans if the opportunity presents itself. But the fleas do not actually live on a person’s body.
Fleas can, however, attach themselves to clothing being worn by a person. People frequently experience a cluster or line of flea bites around an elastic band of clothing where it meets the skin, such as around the waistline or socks.
